Christ Surunis, Sr. Accounts Supervisor at Lutron Electronics - Lighting Control institute has worked in the field of lighting controls since 2001. Prior to his career with Lutron, Christ worked in the field of commercial interior design with an educational emphasis in Hospitality Design.

Christ will review current industry trends and requirements to so that you can identify how business goals towards space efficiency, customer experience and sustainability affect the hotel space design and plan implementation. By examining industry trends that are affecting design consideration within hotel spaces, you will be able to identify the impact of light and related energy codes within these spaces.

Laguna Honda Tour

Tour one of the first public healthcare facilities to comply with the Green Building Council’s LEED® standards for environmental sustainability.

Stantec Architecture, in association with Anshen + Allen, was commissioned to design this historic complex as a national model for long-term public healthcare. The project encompasses a comprehensive program of housing and a continuum of long-term health care services including 30 beds of acute care units, acute general medical facilities, and rehabilitation. The 1,170 beds of skilled nursing facilities include units for chronic care, dementia, psycho-social, AIDS/HIV, rehabilitation, total care, hospice, and restorative care. The scope of services includes master planning, programming, and design of state-of-the-art facilities totaling 751,000 sf, with 607,000 sf in new construction and a 144,000-sf remodel of the original landmark hospital building. Work on this complex entailed an outreach program to build support within a politically sensitive, diverse, and active community.

As this is a construction site, pants and close toed, flat shoes are required. Please bring a hardhat if you have one, though some will be provided. There will be no elevator, and the tour includes 4 flights of stairs and lots of walking, so please consider this when registering. We will meet in the main lobby of the old building adjacent to the Forest Hill muni station at 2:45, and the tour will start promptly at 3:00 pm.

LEED NCv2.2 Exam Prep

The AIA East Bay is offering a LEED Exam Prep class on Thursday, May 21, but you must already be registered for the NCv2.2 exam to benefit from this class. The deadline to register for the current version of the LEED exam before the LEED 2009 changes take effect was March 31, 2009. However, you have until June 30, 2009 to take the exam. In order to benefit from AIAEB's LEED NCv2.2 Exam Training Workshop on May 21 it is essential that you are already registered for the exam and plan to take your test before June 30th.

The United States Green Building Council's (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards have played an integral role in transforming the building marketplace and have set the bar for high-performance buildings. LEED, however is intended to be a tool, not an end result. With this in mind, our program will give you the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and apply the LEED Rating System so that their projects will achieve their full potential.

One of the first steps towards understanding how to effectively apply LEED is to become a LEED Accredited Professional, demonstrating a basic understanding of the credits, requirements, processes and concepts outlined in the LEED Reference Guide. This LEED Exam Training workshop has proven effective in preparing people to pass the LEED exam - the first time. The material will be delivered in a clear and concise format while presenting the types of exam questions that are asked within each section so you know what and how to study. You will also review example scenarios from real world projects to help you better understand and remember the material while giving you an opportunity to put the concepts to practice.

One of the best ways to prepare for any test is to work through sample questions. This workshop concludes with a 25-question in-class practice exam and a full 80-question take-home exam that accurately reflects the types of questions you'll see on the test.

Included as part of the training, participants receive a workbook that summarizes the key information and follows the outline of the course.

Strategies in the Pursuit of Net Zero Energy, Sustainability and Carbon Neutrality

Join AIA East Bay's Young Architects Forum and Committee on the Environment for a presentation by Steve Brennan of the Davis Energy Group on Tuesday, November 18th at 6pm.

The presentation will review a few case studies on Zero Energy Homes. The design process for each home will be discussed, as well as performance results, cost-benefit of energy efficiency measures, and the research, incentive and voluntary programs that the homes participated in. Though the focus of the presentation is Zero Energy Homes, which indicates zeroing out operating energy, there will be some discussion of reducing embodied energy and sustainability.

Participants will learn how to define zero energy homes and operational energy use. What the Building America program is, and what the methods and goals of that program are with respect to Zero Energy Homes. Techniques and systems that have been employed to attempt to reach net zero energy, and teh results of their performance. How the USGBC LEED for Homes program goes beyond energy efficiency (operational energy) to approach sustainability.

Cost and Value of Green Buildings

Architects and clients around the world are embracing sustainable design to create buildings that give back to the environment, brightening the future for future generations. LEED 2009 Now Open for Public Comment

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) on May 20 opened the first public comment period on LEED® 2009, the next evolution of the LEED green building certification system. The public comment period will be open until June 22. LEED 2009, according to the USGBC, represents a reorganization of the existing LEED rating systems for commercial buildings, combined with a series of major technical advancements focused on improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and addressing other environmental and human health outcomes.

The LEED Green Building Rating System was developed by USGBC in 2000 to drive market transformation in the building industry by defining a consensus metric for leadership in green building that forms a basis for continuous improvement. Detailed information about specific proposed technical changes to the rating system can be found in the background documents that accompany the public comment forms on USGBC’s Web site.

Case Studies:
Folsom Dore Apartments, a Citizens Housing Corporation property, provides 98 units of affordable housing for low- and very low-income residents with a variety of special needs. The project was completed in February, 2005, and was certified LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver by the US Green Building Council in October 2006, making it the first San Francisco affordable housing project to receive that level of recognition.

The Plaza Apartments, developed by the Public Initiatives Development Corporation, a non-profit subsidiary of the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, provides 106 studio apartments for the formerly chronically homeless of San Francisco. Conard House provides on-site support services, including 5 full-time Case Managers, a full-time Psychiatrist and Nurse as well as a part-time Nurse Practitioner. The Plaza Apartments was completed in December 2005. It is a pilot project for the Redevelopment Agency’s “Green and Sustainable Guidelines” program, as well as being a grantee of Enterprise Foundation’s “Green Communities Initiative.” The Plaza is also LEED registered, and anticipates receiving a “Silver” rating.

The U.S. Green Building Council, Northern California Chapter (USGBC-NCC) presents the 1st Annual Green Building Super Heroes Award Gala, a special event at the Mezzanine in San Francisco http://www.mezzaninesf.com/club.asp. The reception begins at 5:30 and the program will begin at 6:30.
Tickets are $75 in advance (buy online), or $100 at the door.The Gala features a a Super Heroes theme, with costumed super heroes, special VIP speakers (to be announced soon), a chance to win dinner for two at Chez Panisse, gift bags with green goodies, the Lee Bloom Jazz Combo, and a festive and fun atmosphere. A special prize goes to the most creative green building super hero costume!

USGBC-NCC will honor 4 pioneers of the green building movement from Northern California, in different industry categories:

Founder's Award
David Gottfried, founder of USGBC. David held the first Board meeting of USGBC in our current office in San Francisco in 1993.

Individual
Mrs. Huang - The owner of The Orchard Hotel, a LEED Certified Hotel .

Non-Profit Organization
Ella Baker Center for Human Rights - Van Jones. Van and the Center are pioneers in incorporating social justice and equity issues in the green movement. Van is a leader of the Apollo Project and works with low-income people in Oakland to promote good (green) jobs and social justice.

Corporation
Fireman's Fund - launched the nation's first "green insurance" program that offers a 5% discount if you build a LEED building.
