Unbuilt Design Awards Call for Entries
This program encourages submittals by students, recent graduates, and artists--in addition to architects and design professionals. It was developed in response to the 2009 economic climate to recognize work that is "on the boards" and highlight design excellence. In the spirit of the program's intent, registration fees are kept low.
The jury is impressive:
Richard W. Thompson, FAIA, AICP, Los Angeles
Richard Thompson, FAIA is principal in charge of the Urban Design and Planning Studio at AC Martin Partners. Under his leadership, the studio has produced an award-winning portfolio in campus master planning, new community planning, urban mixed-use development and urban revitalization here and in Asia . As evidence of their success, all of AC Martin's master plans have been approved by their respective communities and institutions and guide the architectural design that follows. Richard has also directed the preparation of 16 college and university master plans, each defining a vision for growth and enhancement.
Anne Fougeron, AIA, San Francisco
Anne Fougeron, AIA founded the nationally-recognized design firm Fougeron Architecture more than 20 years ago on the premise that designing great buildings and providing more personal service were not mutually exclusive goals. The firm's projects exhibit a strong commitment to clarity of thought, design integrity and quality of architectural detail, receiving awards from all levels of the AIA and other organizations. Ranging in scale from residential and mixed-use housing to commercial, civic and health care, Anne's work has been widely featured in publications such as Architectural Record and the San Francisco Chronicle.
Jeffrey L. Day, AIA Omaha
Jeffrey Day, AIA is the Omaha-based principal of Min | Day, an architectural partnership spanning locations in San Francisco and Omaha , Nebraska . The practice draws on the principals' backgrounds in art, landscape and building design to provide informed and flexible design that serves individuals to institutions, urban to rural sites, and projects ranging from furniture to large buildings. Jeffrey's widely-published work has won recognition and numerous awards, including the 2007 AIA California Council Emerging Talent award and the 2009 New Practices San Francisco award.

Enter in one or more of the following categories:
Engineering
This award recognizes engineers or engineering firms that regularly specify, design or build commercial, industrial and institutional projects using wood. It acknowledges those individuals or firms that contribute to the selection of wood in a project, lead the way for future projects in wood and contribute to the creation of innovative wood structures that push the boundaries of conventional wood building practice.
Institutional Wood Design
The healing and learning properties associated with a wood environment have been well documented. This award recognizes the aesthetic benefits of wood in institutional applications such as schools, churches, hospitals, long-term care facilities, libraries, and municipal buildings, including recreational facilities (such as arenas, pools and park facilities), which have demonstrated wood’s strength, beauty, versatility, cost-effectiveness and/or other qualities.
Commercial Wood Design
This category recognizes the creators of commercial projects that push the limits of wood design in industrial buildings, offices, stores, malls, lodges, clubhouses and other public spaces. Nominations will be judged on the basis of showcasing qualities of wood such as strength, beauty, versatility, and cost-effectiveness.
Green Building
Wood contributes to building high performance by reducing energy use, pollution and overall environmental impact, and making efficient use of resources. Entries in the green building category should demonstrate how some or all of these principles have been applied in the building’s design and construction.
Interior Beauty of Wood
This category recognizes the extensive use of wood inside a non-residential structure. Consideration is given to the interior of buildings where wood products are used extensively in any variety of applications. This could include, but is not exclusive to, ceilings, soffits, wall paneling, flooring, door and window trims, shelving, storage or entertainment centers, and bookcases.
Multi-Unit Wood Design
Wood Design Awards honor the creators of new projects that push the limits of wood design in structures that demonstrate excellence in the use of wood. Winning projects will showcase the special qualities of wood such as strength, durability, beauty, versatility, and cost-effectiveness. The multi-unit category includes commercial applications, offi ces, stores, malls, condominiums, multi-unit residential, resorts and other public spaces.

2008-09 Grants for Research in Architecture Announced
This November, Rafael Viñoly Architects will award up to five grants of US$60,000 each for studies focused on transformations in the built environment within dynamically changing societies. Singular grants have been a vital component of the practice's Training and Research Programs since their 2005 introduction. This year, to commemorate the firm's twenty-fifth anniversary, multiple grants will be conferred..Proposed projects should emphasize original research focused on any region of the world, though there is particular interest in studies addressing relevant issues in China, the Middle East, Russia, and South America. Study subjects might include new demands for housing and infrastructure due to urban immigration in China, South Asia, and Africa; the proliferation of new cities in sparsely populated regions of the Middle East; threats to historic resources posed by development or changing political climates in Russia, Eastern Europe, and former European colonies; and more. The firm seeks insights into how these and other transitions are reshaping the work of architects and others charged with managing our physical surroundings..Studies may be framed in reference to aspects of architectural design, engineering, construction, planning, project delivery, and conservation; the techniques, technologies, practices, and materials associated with these; the governmental policies, economic, and social factors that shape them; or the trades, crafts, and professions with which they are involved. Citizens of all countries are eligible to apply for the grants individually or as teams. In addition to receiving financial support to pursue their studies, Rafael Viñoly Architects Research Fellows may elect to spend a portion of their time in residence at the firm's New York offices. In 2010, the firm intends to publish the Fellows' final papers in book form and to sponsor a New York conference at which the Fellows will present and discuss their work.
The deadline for submitting grant proposals is August 1, 2008. Grant recipients will be notified in November.

Call for proposals: Sustainable Design Experts
Live Green, Live Well
As the demand for eco-friendly goods and design services continues to increase, more home furnishings manufacturers are responding with "greener" products. The San Francisco Mart is providing a venue for those products in one of the United States' most environmentally-conscious geographical areas during Live Green, Live Well, a sustainable design and home furnishings show on May 8 & 9, 2008.
Live Green, Live Well is the only trade show dedicated to green residential furnishings and design. Now in its second year, the show will offer a full range of home furnishings products from established and emerging manufacturers that are using greener raw materials and/or manufacturing methods.
Educational seminars are an important part of this show. Interior design professionals and home furnishings retailers need to educate themselves on the subject. Thus, you have the opportunity to participate in this unique event, giving you (and your message) exposure to a highly influential audience - hundreds of eco-conscious West Coast interior design professionals, architects, home furnishings retailers, builders and related trade professionals.
Click here for the application: http://www.sfmart.com/livegreen/green_pdf/GreenShowRFP08.pdf . Please complete and return to me by Friday, February 1.
