City of Orinda Mayor's Award

City of Orinda Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Architecture, Landscape and Environmental Sustainability

Call for Entries and Application
Applications Accepted March 15, 2007 to September 15, 2007

The Mayor of the City of Orinda invites entries for the "Mayor’s Award for Excellence" to recognize excellence in local architecture, landscape and environmental sustainability projects which make an extraordinary contribution to the character and livability of Orinda neighborhoods.

Eligibility
All submissions must be for projects in the City of Orinda that were completed no earlier than January 1, 2004.
Applicants may submit any number of eligible entries provided each is submitted separately with separate entry fees.
All residential projects, regardless of project size, budget, style, or building type are eligible for submission, including remodeling projects.
Criteria
Residential projects are eligible and will be evaluated based on the criteria contained on the attached form for their respective categories. For all categories the design must be consistent with the City’s General Plan and development standards and guidelines.
Entries are weighed individually, not in competition with others.
Jury
A panel of residents with experience in architecture, landscape and environmental sustainability will be appointed by the Mayor to select the award winners.
Up to three finalists may be recognized in each category.

"Building and Renovating Museums" Workshop

The Western Museums Association invites you to attend a day long workshop entitled “Building and Renovating Museums” taking place at the De Young Museum. This workshop is a day-long exploration of the process for designing, building and renovating, and financing museums.

The workshop auditorium at the De Young allows for a larger audience than the museum professionals that will be attending this preconference workshop as part of the WMA Annual Meeting in Oakland “Shake it Up: Museums Activate and Innovate” October 10-14, taking place at the Oakland Marriott City Center.

The fee to attend the workshop is $125 ($75 workshop + $50 one day registration for members of WMA – this is extended to AIA members) and includes lunch.
Time: 8:45 am – 4:30 pm (motorcoach transportation is available/included from the Oakland Marriott leaving at 8:00 am.

Retrofit Seminar

A free residential earthquake retrofit seminar sponsored by the Association of Bay Area Governments will be held on Saturday, September 15 at Albrier Community Center, 2800 Park St., Berkeley, between 10 and 12.

The principles and practice of effective earthquake retrofitting, as well as recent developments in Oakland's multi-million dollar retrofit transfer tax program, which pays for retrofits designed by architects, will be presented by members of the Structural Engineer's Association of Northern California, Thor Matteson, a structural engineer and author of the only book on shear walls published by the International Code Council and a former retrofit contractor and residential earthquake damage inspector for FEMA.

LUNCHTIME WATERCOLOR


Join Robert Becker for a fast and painless introduction to some basic techniques in watercolor. Knowledge of watercolor is not necessary for this workshop. The goal of this workshop is to give a quick overview of using watercolor for quick presentations and personal use. Watercolor is unparalleled in breathing life into an image. Not only the domain of a perspective drawing, watercolor can give the simplest plan, elevation or even a cocktail napkin sketch warmth and atmosphere.


ALL MATERIALS WILL BE PROVIDED!


This workshop will give you an easy way to try watercolor without pressure. The exercises will be done on top of your own drawings. By photocopying your own images directly onto watercolor paper, Robert will demonstrate on one copy as you try the technique on another copy at the same time. Each person will have a great hands-on experience. The group will be led through a series of exercises demonstrating the basic watercolor washes on the appropriate areas of your own drawings. Discussions about materials, techniques, and style will accompany the painting experience.

Draft Regional Rail Plan-Public Meeting

Track the Bay Area’s rail future at a public meeting on the Draft Regional Rail Plan

After 18 months of analysis and stakeholder involvement, we are unveiling a blueprint for expanding the region’s network of rail lines. The Draft Regional Rail Plan will identify potential rail passenger and rail freight improvements for the near-, intermediate-, and long-term.

Come to one of a series of public meetings (listed below) where you can:
· See and comment on what’s proposed to move people and freight throughout the region in the coming 50 years
· Learn how the regional rail network would be enhanced with proposed California high-speed rail investments (and view alternatives for bringing high-speed rail into the Bay Area)
