Multifamily Energy Efficiency and Green Building in the Bay Area
California's T-24 2005 building code presents new challenges for multifamily projects! Come see what some Bay Area Multifamily Housing projects are pursing in order to exceed the current energy code by at least 15%.

Heather Larson, Assoc. AIA, project manager of the California Multifamily New Homes (CMFNH) program sponsored by PG&E, will present case studies and analysis of qualifying highrise and lowrise projects, in Climate Zone 3, with and without Air Conditioning. The California Multifamily New Homes Program offers cash incentives and technical design assistance towards exceeding the code by at least 15%. Achieving this threshold opens the door to additional opportunities including ENERGY STAR® marketing benefits, the New Solar Homes Partnership and Green building certification.

Tenaya Asan of Build it Green will cover the GreenPoint Rated program, a third-party rating system providing an evaluation of green practices within the multifamily project. She will discuss what it is, how it works and the benefit to the builder and community. She will give some case studies of GreenPoint Rated projects.

Downtown Oakland: the 10K Report Card

Wednesday 5/30/07

Downtown Oakland--the 10K Report Card
Now that it has been about 8 years since former Mayor Jerry Brown put the 10K Housing Initiative forward – 10,000 new residents in downtown Oakland by encouraging 6,000 new market-rate housing units – it is time to look at the results and think about the possibilities to build from this initiative and continue the reinvigoration of downtown Oakland. The AIAEB Chapter and its Regional and Urban Design Forum are hosting a panel discussion to review and critique the results of the 10K initiative and talk about the future.

Moderated by SF Chronicle Columnist John King, this panel discussion will be a frank look at the 10K Housing Initiative begun by past-Mayor Jerry Brown. Panelists include Peter Waller, AIA of Pyatok Architects; Colland Jang, AIA past Oakland Planning Commissioner; Dan Parolek, AIA of Opticos Design; Kate O’Hara, Community Benefits Program Director, East Bay Alliance for Sustainable Economy; and Susan Friedland, Affordable Housing Associates.

Time: 5:30pm-8:00pm
Location: AIA East Bay Chapter Office, 1405 Clay Street, Oakland
Cost: $10 chapter members; $20 non-chapter members. Cost includes program and dinner.
This meeting open to all. RSVP's are mandatory.

Integrated Green Building Systems

From AIASF:

Integrated Green Building Systems (1.5 HSWs)
May 23, 2007
5:30 - 7:30 pm
AIA San Francisco
130 Sutter St, Suite 600
San Francisco

We are currently in an environment where we have many similar and sometimes competing definitions of what is "Green" and what constitutes energy efficiency. We will discuss how these various steps are related and how to fit them into an integrated process of planning, design and engineering, field, testing, and commissioning, to create buildings that perform not just on paper, but in the real world--specifically addressing the following: Title 24, LEED-h, Green Points, Energy Star Home, HVAC Design, Insulation, Building Envelope, Duct Leakage and Design, HERS Verification, Performance Testing, commissioning, local generation (PV, Thermal), and State and Federal rebates.

Presenter Matt Golden, Sustainable Spaces Founder and President
Prior to founding Sustainable Spaces, Matt worked as an Energy Consultant at Sun Power and Geothermal Energy helping homeowners and businesses develop solar power systems. Matt developed the concept for Sustainable Spaces to meet this market demand by providing a single full service resource and a brand homeowners can trust to help them improve the comfort.

Change Conference--an Integrated Project Delivery Event

From AIA California Council:

The Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) "Change" Conference
will be held on June 25-26, 2007, at UCSF Mission Bay in San Francisco.

Whatever your definition of Integrated Practice or your understanding of Building Information Modeling, it is undeniable that there are forces at work that are changing the way the world gets built. How this affects those involved in design and construction, and those that occupy, use and are responsible for the operations of the built world is yet to be seen. However, changes are at work that are and will continue to challenge traditional and standard approaches to the design, construction and occupancy of buildings.

At this moment in time, join with a variety of talented, concerned and involved individuals who, as both participants and observers, have a stake and a say in shaping the shape of the world in which we live.

Call for Submissions: Extreme Houses

My name is Joanne Azern and I work for a tv production company in New York City called KPI. We are currently producing a new 13 part series for HGTV called "Extreme Building" focusing on unique houses with extreme construction or engineering challenges. Each episode is 30 minutes long and will feature two houses per episode. We have already filmed about half of the series and are still looking for residences to complete the line-up. We have been profiling the work of some of the most pioneering, innovative and cutting edge architects in the country. Each house that is featured is unusual and unique not only in its design but also in its engineering and construction. So for example we have featured a house that rotates, another sculpted from steel, and one that is sandwiched between boulders.

I was wondering if you knew of any houses in California that may be good candidates for our series? The houses must be completed. The uniqueness may come from the site, design, shape, or materials used.

How do You Save E-Catalogs?

We've just had a call from an 8-person firm that's enjoying the green switch from vendor's printed catalogs to e-catalogs. The only problem? They take up a lot of storage space on the server!

How does your firm file and save e-catalogs? Do you have a seperate server? Is your server "big enough"? Do you burn the catalogs to re-writable CD-Roms and store them via CSI classifications?

Post your answer through the comments link (below) or email it to
sidney@aiaeb.org .

Comment on MTC's Draft Public Participation Plan

From the Metropolitan Transit Commission:

MTC is releasing its Draft Public Participation Plan for comment. Newly adopted federal legislation requires metropolitan planning organizations such as MTC to adopt such a plan to provide the public with opportunities to be involved in the transportation planning process. As a result, we embarked on a four-month evaluation of our current public participation practices by requesting input from the public on how to best engage them in our transportation planning process. We conducted a Web survey and consulted with staff of numerous public agencies. In addition, we conducted focus groups with a range of interests, including:

-Representatives from MTC’s three advisory committees
-Peer Panel with public information officers from a range of local, state, regional and federal transportation and environmental protection agencies
-Participants in a support group for low-income single parents attending college -Leaders of bicycle and pedestrian groups -transit union representatives -private transportation providers

The results of our efforts are incorporated into the Draft Public Participation Plan, which is available on MTC's Web site:

Small Firm Forum: Tour of New Home in Contra Costa Wilds

AIA-East Bay Small Firm Forum -
Thursday, 5/01/07
noon - 1:30 pm

Energy Efficient Home in the Country: Architect's Tour.

Pam Seifert will show us her new home, which was designed by Pam and engineered and built by her husband, Steve Harvey: "Our home is three stories and has an elevator, has an 8 kw photovoltaic system as well as
solar hot water and uses no fossil fuels except what we burn in our vehicles. We are on a well and septic. I have a convenient kitchen garden right outside my kitchen door and my poultry live adjacent to it.
Two of my horses live here with us so far, and my third one will be coming fairly soon (as soon as my husband grades a riding arena for us.) This is really 'the country' out here."

Location: 100 Rancho de Maria, Martinez

Directions:
"To drive here from Oakland: come out highway 24 east through the Caldecott Tunnel. Take the main Orinda exit. Upon exiting, turn left at the stoplight, Proceed on Camino Pablo toward Richmond and El Sobrante.
Continue through Orinda. Turn right at the stoplight onto Bear Creek Road, Proceed on Bear Creek for about 9 miles until you come to a top sign at Alhambra Valley Road. There will be a small vineyard on the far right
corner. Proceed through the stop sign. At that point the road name changes to Pereira. Proceed on Pereira. When the sign says,"Private Road", keep coming. Look for a large, old wood barn on the right. Just after it, turn left onto Rancho de Maria. We are the first driveway on the left with a black iron gate. You can park down on the street and walk up to the house, or drive up and park near the house. I suggest carpooling."

If you want to come on BART, please let Pam know ahead what time you will arrive there and we will pick you up there [her email address is pamseifert@aol.com.]

Bring: Your lunch and a drink. Non-AIA Members, please also bring $3.00 for the Forum's kitty (or $36.00 for an annual SFF membership).
