LEED AP Exam Training Workshop: Building Design and Construction

The Building Design and Construction LEED AP Exam Training Workshop will be held at the AIA East Bay on Friday, December 18 from 8:30am - 5:00pm. Led by Alex Spilger of GreenStep, the workshop will cover all of the key concepts necessary to pass the LEED BD+C exam including:

  • Project Site Factors
  • Water Management
  • Project Systems & Energy Impacts
  • Project Materials
  • Improvement to the Indoor Environment
  • Stakeholder Involvement in Innovation
  • Project Surroundings & Public Outreach

The Instructor:

Alex Spilger is Principal and Founder of GreenStep and has taught over 30 LEED exam training workshops through organizations such as local chapters of the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and American Institute of Architects (AIA), the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business and the Sustainable Building Advisors Program among others. He has also developed curriculum for UC Berkeley Extension where he teaches a 6-week LEED Project Management course. He draws from his experience working on over three dozen green building projects to offer practical and engaging workshops designed to prepare you pass the test with confidence - the first time. (www.greenstepeducation.com)

Proven Results:

“I just took the exam and passed with a score of 181! As an architect and attorney, I'm a veteran of many licensing exams and associated prep classes. I must tell you, your course is one of the very best I've taken. It was very concise and well focused, with great exam-specific content. I was able to prepare effectively solely from the materials you provided. I would heartily recommend your course to anyone hoping to obtain a passing score. Many thanks.”
- R. Reiss, esq. AIA NCARB LEED AP

"GreenStep is the sole reason I passed the LEED Exam. Without Alex's tutelage, I would not have been able to pass this difficult test. He was instrumental in helping me understand the fundamentals and achieve proficiency with the LEED Rating System."
- Garrett Johnson, Assistant Project Manager, Plant Construction. LEED AP

“Alex, our five staffers that took your class have all taken the exam and passed. We are 5 for 5. As the leader of our company, I knew the day was well worth the investment when we finished up. But the results speak for themselves. We can’t wait to get our feet wet in real world applications. Thanks again for helping our staff down the path of accreditation.”

- P. Verdicchio, LEED AP, SEC Planning

Required Materials

There are no required materials for this course. It is recommended that at a minimum you read through the requirements for each credit/prereq in the BD+C Reference Guide to gain a basic level of familiarity before the class. Before taking the exam, participants should obtain a copy of the LEED BD+C Reference Guide to study from - it contains most of the information covered on the exam. You can purchase the Reference Guides at the USGBC Store.

The Oakland Regional ACE teams are looking for new mentors in the Oakland and other East Bay areas.

ACE is a national non-profit made up of architect, engineer, and construction industry volunteers dedicated to introducing the industry to high school students in a free after-school program, with particular attention to at-risk youth.

Mentor time commitment varies depending on whether the mentors “share” their efforts or join us as solo mentors, but, generally, we look for a commitment of about 15 two-hour sessions once a week starting in January, plus some start-up/brainstorming sessions before the program kicks off. Two mentors may “split” the effort, if needed. The sessions typically meet from 4pm to 6pm after the work day.

For more information: Contact Myron Humeny at Myron_Humeny@URSCorp.com or go to our national website at www.acementor.org.

Tour: Portola Valley Town Center

Winner of the AIA East Bay’s 2009 Design Awards, The Portola Valley Town Center was designed by Siegel & Strain Architects and Goring + Straja Architects. Join Larry Strain, FAIA and Susi Marzuola, AIA of Siegel & Strain Architects and Jim Goring, AIA from Goring + Straja Architects for this fascinating tour.

The Portola Valley Town Center, expected to achieve LEED Platinum, includes a Library, Town Hall and Community Hall arranged around a Town Plaza and green, restored native habitat, and a daylighted portion of creek, playing fields and maintenance facilities. This new Center weaves through civic buildings and spaces, oak woodlands and playing fields, into a civic center that meets the Town’s paramount goal: compliment the natural beauty of the landscape in the greenest way possible.

The seismically unsafe old Town Center was deconstructed. Salvaged materials were reused as beams, paneling, countertops, and structural fill. Exterior siding and louvers are salvaged wood; wood flooring is local eucalyptus; concrete is a high slag mix. These and other measures reduced construction carbon emissions by 32%.

The old town center in Portola Valley inhabited a 1950s school that was built directly on top of the San Andreas Fault. The new center occupies the same 11 acre site but locates the buildings in the northwest corner, out of the fault zone. The new town Center resolves the seismic, access, capacity, and infrastructure issues of the old town center creates a unified whole that supports the civic, community, and cultural life of the town, and expresses the character and values of Portola Valley.
