Ceramic Tile & Stone Specifications: Critical Issues

Interior designers, specifiers and managers know that it's the details that make the difference between "good" and "great" projects. Any major component of the work done poorly becomes noticeable and can be the source of conflict or the cause of a lost client. Clear, concise and accurate specifications are critical to achieving the design intent of any tile or stone project. They enable the design professioinal to achieve the desired appearance at the optimal balance of cost and quality. They allow the tile setter to understand exactly what is wanted, and they provide a reference to ensure that the work provided is in keeping witht hte design concept.

This program, scheduled Wednesday, October 15th, discusses how to specify ceramic tile and stone using the TCNA Handbook. The presentation includes critical specification issues such as lippage, expansion joints, sound and crack isolation. It will also cover how to integrate the TCNA Handbook installation guideelines onto construction documents.

Craig W. Hartman, FAIA, is a design partner based in SOM’s San Francisco Office. His work with SOM in the United States, Europe, and Asia, while extremely broad in its typology—ranging from entire urban districts to singular works of commercial, civic, and cultural architecture—consistently adheres to a rigorous modern vocabulary that acknowledges issues of place involving climate, physical and cultural landscape, and historic precedent.
Mr. Hartman joined SOM in 1973 and served as design partner in the firm’s Houston and Washington, D.C. offices before coming to San Francisco, where he has established the West Coast architecture group as one of the region’s premier design practices. Just as SOM is a multifaceted practice encompassing architecture, planning, engineering, interiors, and graphic design, Mr. Hartman’s work demonstrates how, through interdisciplinary collaboration, projects can achieve innovation in design and building performance.
Mr. Hartman has received numerous awards and honors for his work throughout his career, including four National AIA Honor Awards, and a Federal Design Achievement Award in the 2000 Presidential Design Awards Program. In 2001 he became the youngest recipient of the Maybeck Award from the California Council of the American Institute of Architects. This award recognizes a “lifetime achievement in architectural design” by an individual.

Dr. Vasquez de Velasco joined Ball State in August 2007 from Texas A&M University where he served as executive associate dean and director of outreach as well as coordinator of the Las Americas Digital Research Network. At Texas A&M, he earned the Graduate Faculty Award in 2003 and 2004, given by the graduating class of the professional architecture program, and received the College Teaching Excellence Award from the Association of Former (A&M) Students. Also, his efforts in the development of international programs in Europe and Latin America were recognized with the University International Excellence Award.Dr. Vasquez de Velasco earned his bachelor's degree in architecture and urban planning in 1979 from Universidad Ricardo Palma in Lima, Peru; his master's degree in architecture in 1982 from the University of Toronto; and his doctoral degree in architecture from Delft University of Technology in 1991.

Monthly Program: Steven R Winkel, FAIA Introduces the New California Green Building Code

California has just adopted the Nation's first state-wide green building standards code. This new code puts California in the forefront of promoting green building technologies along with promoting increased energy and water conservation in our built environment The new code becomes a part of the building codes for the State and as such will be updated every three years to take advantage of lessons learned in implementing these new standards and to allow California designers and builders to take advantage of ongoing improvements in green building techniques and technologies.

The code will be voluntary for the next three years as it is tested throughout the State. It will be used in concert with locally adopted green regulations which are still allowed to be developed to accompany the statewide green code. It will become effective as a voluntary standard in January 2009 and it is expected to be a mandatory part of the 2011 California Building Code.

AIA East Bay chapter member, Steven R Winkel, FAIA, the architect member of the California Building Standards Commission, the body which adopts building codes in California, will explain the development and implementation of the new green code.
