Looking to purchase a mid-century modern home

From a member of the public, Bob Coover:

"We are looking to purchase a mid-century modern home in the East Bay, (i.e. Oakland, Orinda, Moraga, Lafayette, Berkeley). We have located several homes designed by Neutra, but none are for sale.

The particular architect is not as important as the design; we prefer the “bringing the outdoors in” feel that you get with large amounts of glass. We believe that there are several homes in the area by Roger Lee, David Thorne, and Harry Bruno but no luck on locating anything yet. We are ready to buy immediately if anybody has something fitting the bill."

Postscript: Mario Ciampi, FAIA

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of one of the Bay Area's great architects, Mario Ciampi, FAIA. From his award-winning designs to his kind, sweet demeanor, Mr. Ciampi was a revered professional.

From John King's article in Saturday's SF Chronicle:

"Mario Ciampi, whose design work ranged from award-winning schools to the sinuous concrete overpasses that pull Interstate 280 along the San Mateo peninsula, died in Marin on Thursday of heart failure. He was 99.

In addition to his architecture, Mr. Ciampi left his imprint on San Francisco as the consultant in charge of the city's 1963 downtown plan. While many of the specifics were never implemented -- such as removing the wings of the Ferry Building to create a bayside plaza surrounding the campanile-like tower -- the result of his call for creating large squares along Market Street at BART stops is seen today at United Nations and Hallidie plazas. "

A memorial service is pending. Donations can be made to the Hanna Boys Center, 17000 Arnold Drive, Sonoma, CA 95476; or to the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association, 312 Sutter St., San Francisco, CA 94108.
