Moving Architects Toward Building Performance

Pacific Gas & Electric’s (PG&E’s) Energy Training Center recently contracted with Paul Welschmeyer, AIA of Paul Welschmeyer Architects, to offer in-house presentations to architectural firms on the benefits of adding applied building science to their architectural design services.

The presentation Moving Architects Toward Building Performance begins by laying out the architect’s role in minimizing the long-term energy demands of residential and non-residential buildings. It explains the benefits of incorporating applied building science, energy modeling, and Home Energy Rating (HERS II) services into an architectural firm’s practice, and includes case studies of how building science principles can be applied to residential energy upgrades, coordinated with Energy Upgrade California. Additional topics include a preview of upcoming 2013 changes to California’s building energy code, and steps architectural firms can take to prepare their practice for industry changes in the next decade.

A Case Study and Tour in Sustainability, Community and Education of American Canyon High School

Join your local Redwood Empire Chapter of the US Green Building Council and the American Institute of Architects Redwood Empire in celebrating the green design, engineering and community asset that is American Canyon High School. AIA offers the bonus of continuing education AIA credits.

The Napa County High School opened its doors in Fall of 2010 to welcome students and community to an ultra-sustainable and energy efficient campus. The campus achieved Gold certification in the US Green Building's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Program. In the Napa Valley Unified School District, it was more than five years in the planning and was designed for the students, their education and the community. It is the first school in California built under the Collaborative for High Performance Schools, a fellow green-building rating program for K-12 schools.

The $121 million is the largest public building complex in American Canyon and was designed by Quattrocchi Kwok Architects in Santa Rosa, California. It includes seven two-story buildings for administration offices, library, 400-seat theater, multi-use rooms, classrooms, a split-level gym, locker rooms, student store, aquatic center with swimming pool, two storage buildings, football/soccer stadium complex, two concession stands, two baseball fields, two softball fields, two soccer fields and outdoor tennis and basketball courts.

This project boasts a 1MW photovoltaic station providing about 85% of the electricity needed for the campus and a ground source heat pump that uses the earth’s temperature to help heat and cool buildings. Did you know that the average school is 42 years old, and energy inefficiencies cost it approximately $100,000 a year? Come hear from Architect Aaron Jobsen and Engineer Chris DelCore, plus others directly involved in this top project as they share how the building and design increased efficiencies, while creating a sense of community, supported career-driven education, and improved public access to amenities on the campus.

Today, bicyclists and pedestrians traveling between the west end of Alameda and Oakland's downtown must use either a bus with a bicycle rack that carries up to two bicycles or a narrow path in the Posey Tube with two-way pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Also, students who are enrolled simultaneously at Laney College and the College of Alameda do not have a direct transit route between these two schools. The City of Alameda, in cooperation with the City of Oakland, the Peralta Community College District and BikeAlameda, won a Bay Area Air Quality Management District Transportation Fund for Clean Air Regional Fund program grant to operate the Estuary Crossing Shuttle for one year with an option to apply for future year funding.

Request for Executive Architect - Medical Office Building Space OSHPD 3 Conversion, UCSD Medical Center

The University of California, San Diego, will be selecting an Executive Architect to perform design, construction drawings, bid, and construction phase services for an approximately 20,000 GSF conversion of an existing medical office space to OSHPD 3 located on the second floor of an existing medical office building. The approximate total construction cost is estimated at $2,700,000 at CCCI 4842. The project is subject to the campus/university academic and administrative approval process.

Update to the Air District's 2010 CEQA Guidelines and Risk & Hazard Support Documents

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has just posted a May 2011 update to the CEQA Guidelines. The CEQA Guidelines were updated to reflect the Air District’s recently released refined risk and hazard analysis tools. The updated CEQA Guidelines include other clarifications and revisions, summarized on page i in the document, to further assist lead agencies in implementing the Air District’s thresholds of significance.

The Air District also released updates to the following risk and hazard support documents:

Recommended Methods for Screening and Modeling Local Risks and Hazards- describes in detail how to screen and model risk and hazards from stationary, highway, and roadway sources. Also discusses the assumptions and methodologies used in developing the Air District’s stationary source, highway, and roadway screening analysis tools.

Screening Analysis Flow Chart- outlines a step-by-step screening process for estimating risk and hazard impacts in projects.
