What is a Convention Delegate?
AIA members will elect future leaders and debate and decide a wide range of important issues. Only accredited delegates may participate in voting. AIA East Bay encourages any chapter member interested in participating in AIA Business Sessions to be a delegate.

It was at the 2006 Convention in Los Angeles that the membership approved, almost unanimously to pass the AIA East Bay Resolution regarding the sizing of the Electronic Documents for Small Firms and Sole Proprietors.

Most chapter delegates attend the California Caucus Breakfast on Thursday, April 30 to learn about important issues, behind-the-scenes information from California Regional Directors, and provide feedback to the Regional Directors. It is at this breakfast that you will receive your Delegate Card. After you have your card, you will go to the convention floor to be accredited and vote for the elected leadership. Resolutions are presented, debated and voted for on Saturday, May 2.

What do Contractors Look for in Drawings?

A panel of contractors will discuss what they look for in architectural drawings. They will share their opinions on what architects can do to communicate more clearly to ensure accurate bids and a problem free construction project. Bring a set of your drawings and specifications so that the panel can share feedback on what they feel works and what doesn't. This is a chance to get valuable input from contractors that deal with numerous projects,both commercial and residential of all shapes and sizes.

Bird's Nest - Herzog and de Meuron in China

This May, our Monthly Program will feature a fascinating documentary followed by a reception of food, drink and informal networking. The documentary "Bird's Nest: Herzog and de Meuron in China" follows Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron as they design the National Stadium for the 2008 Olympic summer games and a district that serves 300,000 Jinhua inhabitants.

The built environment of China is quickly transforming and international architects are in high demand. Herzog and de Meuron work to create structures that not only serve the everyday needs of the people of China but can represent China to the world in it's international debut. In the face of cultural and political challenges new architectural insights are revealed, as well as an understanding of the effect that this time of rapid change is having on China.

Mid-Century Modern In Your Backyard

Author and project designer Pierluigi Serraino will share the latest finding on his ongoing research on Mid-Century Modern in California. The emphasis will be on the Bay Area architecture in relation to the themes discussed in his book NorCalMod: Icons of Northern California Modernism (Chronicle Books, 2006). Pierluigi is the other of several books, including Modernism Rediscovered (Taschen, 2000), which has reached its second reprint. Vectorworks User Group: Use of BIM In Small Projects

LEED NCv2.2 Exam Prep

The AIA East Bay is offering a LEED Exam Prep class on Thursday, May 21, but you must already be registered for the NCv2.2 exam to benefit from this class. The deadline to register for the current version of the LEED exam before the LEED 2009 changes take effect was March 31, 2009. However, you have until June 30, 2009 to take the exam. In order to benefit from AIAEB's LEED NCv2.2 Exam Training Workshop on May 21 it is essential that you are already registered for the exam and plan to take your test before June 30th.

The United States Green Building Council's (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards have played an integral role in transforming the building marketplace and have set the bar for high-performance buildings. LEED, however is intended to be a tool, not an end result. With this in mind, our program will give you the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and apply the LEED Rating System so that their projects will achieve their full potential.

One of the first steps towards understanding how to effectively apply LEED is to become a LEED Accredited Professional, demonstrating a basic understanding of the credits, requirements, processes and concepts outlined in the LEED Reference Guide. This LEED Exam Training workshop has proven effective in preparing people to pass the LEED exam - the first time. The material will be delivered in a clear and concise format while presenting the types of exam questions that are asked within each section so you know what and how to study. You will also review example scenarios from real world projects to help you better understand and remember the material while giving you an opportunity to put the concepts to practice.

One of the best ways to prepare for any test is to work through sample questions. This workshop concludes with a 25-question in-class practice exam and a full 80-question take-home exam that accurately reflects the types of questions you'll see on the test.

Included as part of the training, participants receive a workbook that summarizes the key information and follows the outline of the course.

He has also developed curriculum for UC Berkeley Extension where he teaches a 6-week LEED Project Management course. He draws from his experience working on over two dozen green building projects to offer practical and engaging workshops designed to prepare you to pass the test with confidence - the first time.

There are no required materials for this course. It is recommended that at a minimum you read through the requirements for each credit in the Rating System or Reference Guide to gain a basic level of familiarity before the class, and that you obtain a copy of the LEED NC Reference Guide to study from. At the Bay Area 2009 Clean Air Plan workshops, District staff will:

Ecocities - An Environmentally Conscious Approach to Architecture

The US Environmental Protection Agency has declared the building industry to be one of the biggest environmental culprits. Architecture 2030 and USGBC are working hard to reverse this ill-repute. Kirstin Miller will discuss ecocities, and how they encourage the return to the heart of our cities, helping to reverse sprawl development and create sustainable cities that promote walking, cycling and public transit. With third parties being used as verification systems for green building, Kirstin asks if ecocity principles could be the answer?

Kirstin Miller serves as Executive Director for Ecocity Builders and has been with the organization since 1997. She has presented for the organization locally, nationally and internationally, including Port Elizabeth, South Africa; Prague, Czech Republic; Curitiba, Brazil; and Shenzhen, China. She works closely with Ecocity Builders' President Richard Register in the development of the organization's "toolbox" of strategies, such as car free by contract housing, environmental restoration transfer of development rights, centers oriented development, ecological demonstration projects and ecological zoning overlay mapping. She also helps coordinate an alliance of local environmental organizations working to promote and advance ecologically healthy urban policies and projects including the development of an ecological demonstration project in the heart of Berkeley, CA.

Kirstin was a key organizer of a coalition of over 100 mostly local community groups and businesses working to push for stronger ecological policies in the City of Berkeley's General Plan revision. In 2005, Kirstin organized a major "Green City Visions" conference in Oakland as part of the 2005 United Nations World Environment Day events, and in 2008 she was Conference Director for the 7th International Ecocity Conference in San Francisco, with over 1,000 delegates meeting for six days. Kirstin currently heads up the development of Ecocity Builders' programs and projects and teaches a course on the ecological city structure at the University of California Extension in San Francisco.

Tile Job Problems and Solutions

Join AIA Small Firm Forum on May 7th from Noon - 1:30pm at Tileshop in Berkeley for a panel discussion that will address typical tile job problems and finding corrective solutions. A panel of three licensed C54 tile setters will each offer specific job experiences that they have encountered in the field. Having on hands-on perspective, they will offer an insightful view to finding solutions to the job. Custom Building Products will also be joining the discussion to provide technical support and appropriate product application. Additional information pertaining to the types of tiles available, and areas of usage will be provided by Tileshop.

The panel includes Riley Doty, Jane Aeon, Danielle De Pianto, and Clayton Peck.

Riley Doty has been a tilesetter for more than 30 years and serves on the board of the Tile Heritage Foundation and is a member of Artistic License, a Bay Area guild of period craftspeople. He contends that the two main nemeses of tile installations are structural stress and water incursion. Restoration often involves re-engineering the tile assembly to better handle these adverse factors. With modern methods and materials, but building upon the strengths of the traditional craft, the tile industry is in a better position than ever to provide effective solutions.

Jane Aeon has been a tilesetter for over 21 years. She majored in Sculpture and Painting at UW-Madison and had found her art training useful tile layout and choosing colors and patterns. She has written several articles for Fine Homebuilding Magazine and consulted for Sunset Tiling 2009.

Danielle De Pianto - J Monti Tile is a 3^rd generation tilesetter. Her grandfather William started Monti Tile Co in 1944, her father John took over the business in 1968, and in 1998 it became a corporation. They offer quality custom tile work, often in traditional mortar bed installations.

Clayton Peck of Custom Building Products is the Regional Technical Representative covering California from Golden Gate south to Fresno. His duties include job product and system specification, job problem analysis and correction, contractor training, distributor training, and technical sales support. Prior to joining Custom Building Products, Clayton was raised in the tile trade working with his Father who owned Dodge Tile Company out of Oakland and Hayward.

Traditional Timber Framing for California - Relevance, Practice and Application

This program will provide architects, engineers and building officials with the tools needed to incorporate and assess the viability of traditional joinery and timber frame design.

In this presentation we will confront the myth that timber framing is obsolete and provide you with the tools and details needed to make traditional timber framing work today. We will look at the past and present timber frame vernacular in California and discuss the nuts and bolts of detailing a timber frame as well as the design process and costs of timber framing.

Leif Calvin has been company steward of Timber Creations since 1993. Based in Santa Rosa, Leif has been building custom commercial and residential timber frames for 15 years in California. Leif has also directed historical timber work in Alaska, as well as contemporary timber work in Hawaii, Washington and Oregon.

About the Access Specialist Program

Join us for a round table discussion on the new State Certified Access Specialist Program (CASP) and its impact on the review and enforcement of accessibility regulations. We will explore how they relate to architects and to the disabled community. Peter Margen will join the forum to share his expertise in the area of disability policy, universal design and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The Certified Access Specialist Program (CASP) was approved by the Division of the State Architect (DSA) and began accepting applications in July of 2008. The certificate serves as evidence that you met the State Architects specific criteria to be identified as a Certified Access Specialist.

In recent years numerous civil claims have been filed against public business and property owners for accessibility issues, many of which are settled out of court. SB 1608 contains language that will change the way construction related accessibility claims are handled throughout the litigation process.

Senate Bill 1608 was introduced to amend sections of the B&P, Government, Health & Safety and Civil Codes relating to disability access. The bill would require that beginning on July 1, 2009, all inspections of a place of Accommodation (AHJ) that relate to permitting, plan checks or new construction be conducted by an inspector who is a certified access specialist. This means local building departments will be required to employ or retain at least one CASP. It also means that the expected number of applicants could double, together with increased opportunities for ACIA inspector members.

Although building inspectors have historically enforced ADA compliance CASP is the first certification of its kind that is dedicated to accessibility code and ADA enforcement. The first applications are now being accepted for the CASP examinations and the first list of Certified Access Specialist will be posted by October 31st. Individuals holding CASP certification will be required to re-certify every three years.
