Honing the Practice in Slow Times

Time on our hands, things to do, employees to lend, skills to improve -- Idle Hands are the Devil's Playground.

In times when work is slow there are things to do. As the squirrel gathers nuts for winter, or as foundations for future construction are staked out in the snow awaiting spring - architects find themselves cleaning archives, training employees, culling details and developing BIM skills and marketing materials while they wait for their next project to start.

Revit Architecture - LEEDing the Way

Revit, as the premier Building Information Management (BIM) software, is being utilized by architects and engineers to coordinate information for completion of LEED certification documentation. David Haynes, R.A. and LEED AP, will discuss the current programs and processes for assisting the design team in verifying the multitude of LEED-based information that Revit can provide.

We will also look at shared parameters, schedules, custom templates, and use of ancillary programs to quantify the information during the schematic and design development phases of the work. Additionally, we will investigate how the IPD team can work together to verify the LEED credits.

Pecha Kucha Night

On February 12th at 6:00pm Women in Architecture will be holding a "Pecha Kucha Night". Pecha Kucha Night is like an "open mike" for designers - come share a selection from your design portfolio, images and stories from your travels, your hobbies, or anything you'd like, and learn about your peers and colleagues at the same time.

Pecha Kucha is, above all, a presentation format devised by architects Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds, for a total of 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show.

Small Firm Forum - Darrel DeBoer

From cutting edge green construction to skateboarding on roof tops, come see Darrel DeBoer's amazingly innovative designs and use of materials. His work will inspire you and fuel your creative fires.

Darrel DeBoer looks for less expensive ways to build with natural materials. His intrigue in the structural qualities of bamboo has led him to build more than a dozen bamboo structures in the US despite traditional building practices. He has experimented with straw and found it not only more successful at insulating than wood, but also less likely to burn and attract rodents. DeBoer also makes custom light fixtures and furniture out of natural materials to help bring his buildings to life.

DESIGNING MULTI-STORY WOOD STRUCTURES

The Woodworks Council offers a terrific, FREE opportunity for architects in Berkeley, February 25th at Hs Lordships!
3 HSW CES/Lus.

The demand for green buildings and rising cost of steel are just two of many reasons that architects are increasingly choosing wood for non-residential buildings. It’s also easy to source and easy to use—and we’ve created these luncheon seminars to demonstrate that wood structures can also be easily designed to meet International Building Code and service life requirements.

Program
8:30 a.m. Registration
9:30 a.m. Introductions

9:45 a.m. Advanced Wood Framing
Speaker - Brian Knight, SE
Miyamoto International, US
While conventional wood framing design and construction practices are generally well understood, they can be modified to make better use of framing materials and improve energy efficiency through advanced framing techniques. This presentation will include an overview of advanced framing in the US, as well as a discussion of typical construction details, design issues and 2006 International Building Code provisions for high-rise wood framing.

Brian Knight is the Managing Principal for the Portland-Vancouver Office of Miyamoto International. His 15 years of experience includes the design of new structures, seismic analyses, rehabilitation and strengthening of existing buildings, and construction means and methods systems. Seasoned in the use of all conventional materials, he has worked on hundreds of projects ranging from simple modifications of existing structures to the design and construction of new high-rise, commercial and institutional buildings.

11:00 a.m. Designing the World's Tallest Mixed-use Wood Building
Speaker - Andrew Waugh
Waugh Thisleton Architects, UK
Constructed entirely in timber, this nine story high-rise in London’s Hackney borough is the world’s tallest modern mixed-use wood building. Comprising 29 apartments, it provides both affordable and private housing as well as substantial commercial space. A modern and engaging counterpart to the 1950s and 60s ground-hugging slab blocks next door, the building’s striking façade has been inspired by the work of artist Gerhard Richter.

Andrew Waugh has been a Director of Waugh Thistleton since the company’s inception. Prior to co-founding the practice, he gained a strong footing in large-scale developments at Kohn Pederson Fox Associates in London. Andrew is firmly committed to designing and building environmentally sustainable buildings, and lectures extensively on the importance of corporate social responsibility.

12:00 p.m. Lunch

1:00 p.m. European Experience: Construction and Testing of a Six Story Wood Frame Building
Speaker - Dr. Vahik Enjily, BSc, PhD, CEng, FIStructE, FICE, MIMechE, FIWSc
Building Research Establishment (BRE), UK

In this session, Dr. Enjily will outline the mandate and work of the Building Research Establishment and discuss in detail the BRE Timber Frame 2000 Project—an applied research initiative that involved construction and performance testing of a six story wood frame building. The performance testing for fire significantly contributed to the recent amendment of the English Building Code permitting wood construction up to seven stories in height.

Dr. Enjily is a qualified Chartered Engineer with a Fellowship of the Institutions of Civil, Structure and Wood Science, and also a Member of the Mechanical Engineers. He has written confidential strategic reports for several European industry associations and has provided independent advice for the Building Regulations, Forestry Commission, the European Commission and others. He is currently BRE’s International Director and expert witness for construction courts, industry and the public.

Learning from the Past to Protect the Future

Join us on Wednesday, January 14, 2009.

Before the advent of the strong materials of reinforced concrete and steel, many societies had developed an approach to seismic resistance based on flexibility rather than strength. In his lecture, Randolph Lagenbach will explore what can be learned from these historical construction practices, by describing a construction technology which he has entitled "Armature Crosswalls". This was inspired by Turkish and Kashmiri traditional construction but designed for use in modern reinforced concrete infill-wall buildings, a building type which is common across the globe.

Teaching Material Needed for Laney College

Dear AIA Members -

Could anyone kindly share some typical project plans that are no longer needed? They will be used as instructional material for the estimating class I will be teaching at the Laney College in Oakland this coming 2009 Spring Semester.

The project(s) can be any small commercial office building, shopping center, multi-use office building, condominium building, etc. Project plans should be 11" x 17" in size and between 8 and 18 sheets. Project specifications are based on the prior CSI 16 divisions at about 1/2" to 1" thick.

I can be reached at 510/530-6351 or on my cell at 510/504-4093.

Thank you very much, and all the best wishes for the New Year.

Only architects or architect/engineer firms, or teams, demonstrating the above capabilities and a planned approach to perform contract services will be considered.

In addition to design capabilities, estimating capabilities of the applicants will be considered. An estimate of construction cost based on level of design detail will be required at each design phase. The selected team shall design to the governments estimated cost for construction.
