Oliver Ranch Tour

Join AIA Redwood Empire on Saturday, May 28th for a tour of the Oliver Ranch in Geyserville, CA. We encourage you to read the FAQ posted on the Brown Paper Tickets url before buying your ticket.

Date: Saturday, May 28, 2011
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Cost: $125.00
Attendance is limited to 55.  I encourage you to get your tickets ASAP. 

Tickets are $125 each and cover the cost of the bus for transportation to/from Oliver Ranch, located in Geyserville California.  The bus will leave from Wells Fargo Center for the Arts.  This is a rare opportunity to visit the ranch that is only open to a limited number of non-profit organizations every year.  More information about the Oliver Ranch Foundation and the link to purchase tickets may be found at the web site below. 

Owner, Steve Oliver leads the tour, and the length is approximately 2 - 3 hours.  The tour covers approximately 2.5 miles and 600 feet in elevation change.  It can be likened to a light hike in the woods as paths are unpaved.  The tour is not wheelchair accessible and comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

We will be stopping before returning to our vehicles to enjoy a catered box lunch and wine tasting at Geyser Peak Winery.

How Design Can Empower Seniors

Hosted by the Women in Architecture Committee and the Design For Aging Regional Northern California Committee.

The program is followed by a wine and cheese networking reception in the AIA East Bay Chapter Office.

This program will discuss the intersection between young designers and architects and elderly residents. Tom Brutting, AIA will make introductions and describe the DFA committee.

The panel is as follows:

Charlie Sheldon & Rachel Robinette – Will discuss the CCA-Bethany project including the role of the residents in the design process and the impact their feedback had on the design and sense of community.
Moderator and Presenter: Leslie Moldow, FAIA – Will discuss the process of design with seniors (renovations and additions), how to engage seniors in the process and the dynamics of getting their input.
Dorit Fromm, AIA – Will discuss alternative models and approaches to design for aging. She will discuss case studies in Europe, co-housing and case studies aging in place support services.

Rachel Robinette is a designer and researcher with a decade of experience translating insights into growth opportunities for clients in a diverse range of industries. Rachel recently joined the Clorox Company as a senior designer in the Corporate Innovation group, where she works with multi-disciplinary teams to discover and develop new product ideas. Prior to that, her work at the innovation consultancy Jump Associates included leading project teams and helping to grow the company from 6 to over 40 employees. Her design work has taken her on ethnographic research trips as diverse as shadowing cowboys in Wyoming, attending motorcycle rallies in Tennessee, and spending countless hours in the homes, kitchens, and cars of families across the US and Latin America. She holds a B.S. in Product Design and an M.A. in Education from Stanford University, where she has taught and lectured. An adjunct faculty member in the Industrial Design department at California College of the Arts, Rachel currently teaches Design Methods and Research and Design for Elders.

Charlie Sheldon is the Interim Chair of California College of the Arts' (CCA) Industrial Design Program. He is also an instructor for the upper-level studios and research courses and manages the student internship program. Click here for more information on Charlie.

Leslie Moldow, FAIA is a principal at Perkins Eastman and managing principal of the Oakland office. She has more than 30 years of experience primarily focused on senior living and special needs housing communities. Her work includes the full continuum from active adult to senior centers, independent living, assisted living, Alzheimer's care, skilled nursing environments, and CCRC's. She is a skilled planner and architect and enjoys assisting clients to develop new and reposition existing communities for affordable and luxury markets.
