Universal Design for Senior Living

Presented by Beverly Brandon, this Webinar teaches you to evaluate if your building's design and interior features assist your seniors in daily living activities. Aging in place design and accessibility features in a senior community are critical to allow seniors to be as independent as possible for as long as possible. This session will highlight these features giving you the tools to assess your own community. Once you identifying barriers you will learn how to eliminate them in an effective way that enriches the lives of your residents.

This session will also assist those communities who are considering accreditation by CARF/CCAC's which require communities to identify their barriers and establish a procedure to eliminate them. During this session attendees will be asked to evaluate spaces and identify if those spaces have barriers or not using the checklist provided. This same checklist of aging in place design features will assist attendees in assessing their own community.

Learning Objective:
  • Know which design features allow aging in place
  • Identify barriers in your community that limit residents' independence and dignity
  • Provide barrier checklist took to assist those communities considering CARF/CCAC

Beverly Brandon is a nationally recognized expert on designing for seniors. For thirty years she has designed senior living communities, Continuing Care Retirement Communities, Senior Communities, Assisted Living Residences, Senior Housing, and Health Care Centers. More recently, she has been involved with existing senior communities who are expanding their programs to include a wellness program, more independent living units to attract younger active seniors, and modifying their health care to embrace culture change. Brandon is a Certified Aging Services Professional (CASP), a member of the American Institute of Architects, and is a LEED candidate.

Central Ventilation Systems and the 'Passiv Haus'

House wraps, newly designed windows and doors, sealing caulks and other insulating materials are used to create air tight buildings for optimum energy efficiency. However, pollutants retained in airtight buildings can be hazardous to their occupants and can jeopardize structural integrity. Central Ventilation systems can address poor indoor air quality, while retaining energy efficiency.

Klas C. Haglid, PE, RA, from Building Performance Equipment, Inc. will join this round table discussion via conference call from Hillsdale New Jersey. He is an Architect and Engineer and has also served as the 'Chairman of Energy Recovery and Owning and Operating Buildings for ASHRAE'.

Bay Area Architecture of the 50's and 60's

On Tuesday, April 21, Henrik Bull, FAIA will be sharing a presentation he has prepared for the Berkeley Architectural History Association (BAHA) on Bay Area Architecture of the 50's and 60's. Bull will discuss his experience with starting a firm that is now more than 40 years old and has managed to survive the recessions of 1974-75 and 1982, as well as the dot com bust of the 90's.

Henrik Bull, FAIA is one of the founding partners of BSA Architects. This 40-year old practice has received over 75 major design awards including "Firm of the Year" by the American Institute of Architects California Council.

Attracted by the modernism that was taking place in the Bay Area, Henrik Bull, FAIA moved out West in 1954. Because of his passion for skiing, Bull spent much time in the Sierras and began working on ski cabins as side projects. This work drew praise and awards and in 1956 Bull started his own firm. His work on cabins soon led to working on residential projects, condominiums, hotels and resorts in Lake Tahoe and Colorado. In 1967 Bull merged his firm with two others to form BSA Architects.

Authentically Green Interiors: Opitimizing Nature's Design

A study of interior landscape's impact on Human-Centered Sustainable Design. This session will present the most relevant and compelling findings on the environmental impact of plants on people's physical, psychological and behavioral needs within the built environment.

Participants will be able to quantify the environmental contributions of plants to a building interior. They will gain practical insight into the bottom-line an human-centered benefits to designing with interior plants. At the end of the program, participants will comprehend exactly how the biophilia design factor (the human affinity for natural things) profoundly effects the well being and overall profitability of the modern built environment. Attendees will walk away with concrete suggestions as to how to use this design consideration.

Peter Alexander, Ph.D., has been trained on CES guidelines and presentation skills. In addition, he receives continuous in-depth training on every aspect of green design considerations as they relate to interior plant installations.
