200 Second’s Architecture and Design Day

200 Second’s Architecture and Design Day
Co-Sponsored by AIA East Bay

2 CES/LUs

Saturday, September 29, from Noon to 4 p.m.

200 Second @ Jackson, Jack London Square, Oakland

This free public event will explore principles of design, color, craft, and composition, showing participants new and novel ways to incorporate these ideas into their everyday lives and enhance their experience of urban living.

Throughout the event visitors can enjoy live music, fine wines, and gourmet snacks and a series of presentations on the practical aspects of urban living. Professional organizer Bethany Saint Clair will introduce the feng shui philosophy behind her practice and offer tips for creating spatial harmony in the home. Using one of the residences at 200 Second Street as a case study, consultant Suzanne Kozel will outline the principles of color selection and explain how to work with existing furnishings and art. After a discussion of how dense neighborhoods actually improve quality of life, 200 Second Street architect David Baker, FAIA will lead a guided tour of the building. And David Pierce, ReadyMade magazine contributor and principal of Ohio, the San Francisco based modern furniture producer, will explore the link between the dwellings of primitive man and the modern aesthetic and what the cave can teach us about minimalist living.

Tours of 200 Second’s model homes will be available throughout the afternoon.

Architecture + Design Day Schedule:

12:30-1:00 p.m. The Feng Shui of Organizing with Bethany Saint Clair
Learn the principles of feng shui and how to apply them in your home. Bethany Saint Clair specializes in creating spatial harmony with clarity and purpose through her practice as a professional organizer with an emphasis on feng shui.

1:30–2:00 p.m. A Case Study in Color with Suzanne Kozel
Suzanne Kozel is a trained color consultant and interior re-designer — a designer dedicated to creating a fresh new look using existing furnishings, artwork, and space. Her presentation will introduce the idea of redesign and explain how to select colors, perfect your palette, and incorporate existing elements.

2:20–3:00 p.m. Better Living Through Density with David Baker, FAIA
200
Second Street architect David Baker, FAIA, believes that denser neighborhoods are more active, interesting, and safe places to live. Using some of his own work as examples, he'll describe the components of good design that make higher density better for all. After the discussion, David will lead a guided tour of the building, highlighting many of the architectural design moves that have helped make 200 Second Street so popular with other architects and designers.

3:30–4:00 p.m. The Quiet Cave: Modernism and the Primitive Impulse with David Pierce
Designer and founder of Ohio Design, David Pierce, explores the link between the dwellings of ancient man and the modern aesthetic, and how nature plays a pivotal role both inside the home and out. How do our most primal instincts influence today’s modernist revival? What does the cave have to teach us about the joys of minimalism?

Whither the Architect of the Capitol?

From Christine McIntee, National AIA Executive Vice President:

"The Congressional Selection Commission, composed of leaders of both the House and Senate, has submitted to the White House a list of three candidates for the position of Architect of the Capitol. With the ball in the President’s court, the next step is for him to nominate an individual (it doesn’t have to be one of the three!) to the Senate for confirmation.

Plenty of rumors are afloat, but no one is willing to say who’s on the joint House/Senate list. This makes it difficult (to say the least) to evaluate the candidates. In response to the lack of information, I have written to the Commission urging them to release the names. I strongly believe the public has a right to know who the nominees are so that citizens can provide informed advice to their elected leaders about the selection process. To date we have received no response. In addition, the AIA Board of Directors sent a letter to President Bush urging him to appoint a licensed professional architect.

Action requested: Getting the names released is only the first step in helping to ensure that the president selects a licensed professional architect as the next Architect of the Capitol. AIA members can lend a hand in shining some light on the process. Write to your Representatives. Ask them to request that Congressional leadership release the names.

And, while you’re at it, ask them to contact the White House to urge the president to nominate a licensed professional architect."

The Village Lives

From ADPSR:

The Village Lives
By Mark Lakeman,
The City Repair Project
Portland, Oregon
www.cityrepair.org

Date: Wednesday, October 10, 2007

Location: Pacific Energy Center, 851 Howard Street,

San Francisco, CA 94103 (2 blocks from Powell Street BART)

Time: 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Light refreshments available at 6:00 pm

$5-10 sliding scale donations requested, no one turned away for lack of funds

Sponsored by ADPSR Northern California Chapter.

A 1.5-hour slide presentation that shares the story of The City Repair Project and its sister design firm Communitecture, in Portland, Oregon. The presentation is chronological, proceeding from the most accessible scales to enormous, visionary collaborations involving thousands of people. As an overall movement, each project repeats the essential principles of localization, community participation and placemaking, while building upon each success to manifest larger and larger impacts.

As both an organization and a larger movement, City Repair inspires and guides the transformation of the grid infrastructure of the typical American city into a vital social commons. As a multidisciplinary culture, City Repair combines architecture, urban planning, anthropology, community development, public art, permaculture and ecological design in projects that transform space and transfer power at local levels. Through a restorative process in which citizens re-imagine and literally re-build their own commons, we are engendering relationships that revitalize the fabric of our local communities within the existing context of social isolation. By re-asserting localized village patterns in the city grid, City Repair establishes both the physical and social foundation for sustainable culture.

It's a chance for you to show a project, detail, creative work or anything you are passionate about and related to what we do as architects. If Architectural Record passed up your project for publication, this is a way to thumb your nose at them and show your work to your peers who understand the difficulties of getting any project completed. Works that are completed, in progress, conceptual, never saw the light of day and even your college projects are all welcome. This is a chance to showcase your creativity and have fun at the same time. Remember to credit any work done while employed by another firm.

It's a slide show. 20 slides max and 20 seconds max each slide. This way each person presents for about 6 minutes and 40 seconds and nobody has to worry about somebody going overboard. So we would prefer powerpoint presentations. Showcase the work and not the fancy powerpoint tools (just simple slides and no fancy gradations, image sliding over images or fades etc).If you don't have powerpoint then Adobe PDFs will work. Just take into consideration how it will be displayed through the projector and go page by page. Just make sure you follow the 20 second rule and no more than 20 pages. Or if you have regular slides and a slide projector, we can fit it in.

Step up to the plate and e-mail either Kellie@aiaeb.org or Gerard Lee. You can choose to answer questions after your presentation or not. Try to keep it short (I know, harder than it sounds).

If you have something you have always wanted to showcase, this is the time for it. Please let us know asap and try to get your files to us by the 11th, so we can compile them. I have the same info posted in our Google group.

If you are not a member of the YAF, it's not a problem. We are open to everyone. So feel free to forward this.
